Buffleheads at Pine Hill...

Rick and I didn't have a lot of time to walk this evening, so we headed over to the small trail around the lake at Pine Hills Park (in Mason, OH). I'm glad we went, because a cute little Bufflehead couple  was tooling around the lake looking adorable...

A male and female Bufflehead were swimming and diving at Pine Hills lake.
(The female has the white cheek patch; the male has more white and is very dapper!)
The two ducks did a lot of diving and the bright white on the male made it easy to spot him when he bobbed back up to the surface. Buffleheads dive for invertebrates and some seeds as well. They swallow their food whole while under the water.

This Bufflehead couple won't be around our area for long. They start heading north in late spring to reach their breeding grounds in Canada and Alaska. Like Wood Ducks, Buffleheads nest in tree cavities and search out abandoned woodpecker holes.

...such a handsome couple! I'm so glad we caught sight of them today.

Cute, sweet, fuzzy bunny in the wet grass at Magee Marsh.....

After waiting out a passing thunderstorm, I climbed out of my car and walked up towards the boardwalk at Magee Marsh. Avoiding the parking pavement, I stuck to the grass at the forest's edge because I could hear a noisy Ovenbird calling out "teacher, teacher, teacher!" over and over. I was hoping to catch sight of him, which I did, but while I was watching him, I noticed movement in the grass about five feet from where I was standing. On my second glance, the cutest of the cute, cute, cutes came out to munch on the rain-soaked grass...

...when this young rabbit came out of the woods to nibble on the wet grass I froze. He was adorable, so I hunkered down in the grass and hoped he wouldn't hop away! He didn't. He watched me for a bit and then started nibbling again...

...stop with the head tilt, bunny. It's unfair use of the cuteness factor!
(This is my favorite bunny photo in the series.)

:-) ...that little nose makes me smile!

These photos are all from the week I spent this May at Magee Marsh in Toledo, Ohio during spring migration for the Biggest Week in American Birding festival. Click here for all the Magee Marsh Biggest Week posts.

Where is our snow?

I miss it. Last year at this time we had well over a foot of snow on the ground, and when I looked out our living room window, I had cute little birds like this staring back at me...

...an American Goldfinch in the snow.

...he's killing me with the head tilt! That little move ratchets up the cute-o-meter like nothing else...

Male American Goldfinches are always pretty, especially in the summer when their breeding plumage glows gold in the sun, but in the winter, when they return to their basic plumage, they fade to an olive brown with only a hint of their former glory around their eyes and neck. Suddenly, they blend with the browns and greys of dead winter and barely raise a second glance, but when snowflakes fall and they sit with a backdrop of bright white snow, they once again glow gold and demand attention!

"I'm a ball of fluff, and I can melt any heart..."

Yesterday we had three flakes of snow. It was supposed to be an inch, but it fizzled into rain. I have snow gear galore—boots, gloves, down pants and a down coat, and a panda bear hat to top it all off—but unfortunately, no where to wear it! Hurry up and get here snow...

(I took these photos 12-12-10. We had snow, snow, snow then.)

About our rain...
We've had our wettest year on record. It has rained almost every other day this year...about 72 inches of rain, which scored us another record—the wettest city in the nation's top 100 largest cities. My hubby, Rick, filled me in on the stats last week. We normally get 137 days of rain. This year, we've had 187 days. If only all the rain this month had been snow... :-)

P.S. Happy Birthday, Dad!!!

What is cute, cute, cute and has chickadees, cardinals, goldfinches and bluebirds plastered all over it?

…my new, very birdy, cute bird fabric tote! Today when I opened my mailbox, I found a large envelope inside from my cousin, Char. It seems when she was at her local fabric store she stumbled across a very unique piece of fabric that reminded her of me. Can you imagine? This fabric screams bird lover, so she picked it up and sewed it into a tote! It is so darn cute I can’t stand it. Thanks, Char!!! Check it out.

It has a little pocket on the front that is
the perfect size for my field journal.

Bip, our Cornish Rex cat, decided to get in on the action. I think he was looking for a can of tuna.

…or maybe he was just trying to see if the birds were real.

…just curious, Kel, pay no attention to me...
gotta sniff it...gotta study it...it's my job.
