wow first I dream about the sun, second of cooperative birds like this ;-) Excellent set of pictures of this nice bathing willet Kelly... The portraits are really exquisite
...thank you so much for all the kind words!! I always appreciate all the comments. :-)
I'm sure you can tell from the photos I fell in love with this bird. He was always in the same isolated part of the beach foraging. I have tons of photos of him. When I took this set, I had sat down and was watching Sanderlings down the beach chasing the waves. This Willet came to me and snuggled down. I then laid down so I was on his level and focused in. I slowly inched forward, and he didn't care. I was probably within 5 feet. The sun was so warm...and he was so sleepy. Eventually he tucked his head in his feathers and went to sleep. I got up and left then. This session lasted over 14 minutes. I talked to him too...Florida birds are amazing. They are so brave and friendly.
I hand hold the camera for all my photos (I used to use a monopod or tripod for distance and macro, but the VR lenses don't seem to require it). I crop the images down in Aperture (I'm a Mac).
The Story Behind "Red and the Peanut"
Red and the Peanut is named after my first bird memory. When I was about six, I was at my Great Aunt Mary's house and she was telling me about Red and the peanut. "Red" was a Northern Cardinal that had trained Aunt Mary to feed it peanuts on demand. Since Aunt Mary's "Red" started it all, what better name could I choose?

Great closeups....but I really love the one with his eyes closed.
Wonderful! :) You must have been very relaxed and calm, too, to be able to shoot away as he fell asleep.
Fantastic close-up glamor shots!

Oh Kelly! These are beautiful!! A perfect example of what can happen when we slow down and allow things to happen around us.
