Have you heard? The federally endangered KIRTLAND'S WARBLER is at the Midwest Birding Symposium at East Harbor State Park!

"Run, don't walk, I tell you, to East Harbor State Park for
a glimpse of the federally endangered Kirtland's Warbler!"

"Was "Peanut" there? Did she get to see him?"

"She was there!!!! And almost got to see him.....
....three times!! But...she and three others were about
one inch too far behind a tree one time....on the wrong
side the other time...on the wrong side again...."

"But she'll see him today...same time, same place...we hope!"

More to come on this little fellow....and all the wonderful birders and bloggers I met while we searched for this incredible bird (I have photos of everyone)! I'm having such a neat, keen, super cool and groovy time up here. To be in the midst of so many birdy people is incredible!

P.S. A thanks goes out to the lovely Ring-billed Gulls on the Lakeside pier who shouted the news (Roy....thanks for helping me with the ID).

I hope you get to see the Kirtland's too! Last year there was a nesting pair just a few miles from us, at CFB Petawawa...but the naturalists who found them -and the nest - didn't announce it until fall, after they left.(Wisely, I think) Haven't heard if they returned this year...hope so. Enjoy MBS - I'm attending vicariously!

Interesting that you can go look for these birds. I would love to be able to walk or ride the bike trail but I think that is a thing of the past.

It is hard for me to do more than get out of the house. It is not as bad as being blind but it is bad enough when you cannot get your breath.

I hope you get to see the Kirtland Warbler, because then hopefully you will get a picture so we can all see it.

Glad your having a good time!!!

I love the shots of the gulls and their commentary! Good luck on seeing that Kirtland's Warbler. Just listen to those gulls and I'm sure they'll point you in the right direction. The Symposium sounds like great fun.

Well? Did ya get him yet?
It was great meeting you at last, what a great time we're all having this weekend!

Good luck with the Kirtland! I'll be up early tomorrow to do a little extra birding myself - out to the every-other-Sunday-morning bird walk at the Norman Bird Sanctuary with some friends.

BTW, I believe that's a Ring-billed Gull in its last winter before adulthood; the Herring Gull develops the red dot on the lower bill by the third winter.

Oh you are so lucky to be there with other birders and bloggers, Kel.. I'm so envious. Hope you do get to see the Kirtland. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Hugs,
Betsy

Roy....I'm terrible at gull ID...I just haven't studied them because I never see them. Thanks for letting me know.

Thanks everyone for the wishes...I'm going to grab a quick bite to eat then head over to Magee Marsh with Heather. (Maybe we will score one there...ha!) Went back....but no Kirtland's Warbler today. Someone sat for 3 hours this morning with nothing. I went at lunch time, same time as yesterday....nothing, but that's okay. Just knowing I was in the same space with one makes me happy. I'll add a post on it....

Kelly, looks like you are in the company of real birders!
Waiting and waiting, I know that sense of expectation well. Hope you'll be lucky the next time.

Very good luck with the Kirtland's Kelly, I really hope you get to see it! I was lucky enough to see one up at Grayling a few years ago with the Iowa Ornithologist Union. Now that is the longest twitch I've EVER done so far!!! (-: Really looking forward to more Midwest Birding Symposium posts!

Neat, keen, super cool and groovy! Yeah, Kelly, that about describes every birding festival I've ever been to also. I'm glad you're enjoying yourself. And the warm sunny weather's gotta be contributing to that too.

Kelly, this post just cracks me up! Having heard you tell the story of your near-misses in person, then seeing your little gull narrate the story... it's just too cute! I wish you would have seen it. Maybe at the NEXT symposium in 2011 one will show up and be a little more co-operative!
