"A ROUTE of evanescence"

A ROUTE of evanescence
With a revolving wheel;
A resonance of emerald,
A rush of cochineal;
And every blossom on the bush
Adjusts its tumbled head,—
The mail from Tunis, probably,
An easy morning's ride.

Emily Dickinson
from "The Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson"

"Evanescence" is such a beautiful word and perfectly describes our little Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Emily Dickinson's sensitivity to nature forever gave us this connection--a perfect match in sound and mood. Fleeting, they do seem to appear out of nowhere and vanish as a vapor when they wish.

"Evanescence" is indeed a wonderful word for describing this winged jewel. They are so tiny, so bright and shimmering and lovely…and so evanescence.

Great photos!

Kelly, I'm sorry I'm so behind on your blog. I've missed so much. Your little hummers are BEAUTIFUL! Those dramatic red flowers and the evening light made for some fantastic shots. Also loved your shots and commentary about the Henslow's Sparrow. You've been getting in some really great birding!

Hi Kel, Perfect word (evanescence) to describe those gorgeous Hummers. So many colors!!!!! Are they not just beautiful????? WOW.... Thanks for sharing.

We have very few hummers here this summer. I've seen a few--but not many.

Have a great Thursday.
Hugs,
Betsy

More stunning shots of the hummers, Kelly. The way the light reflects off them they remind me of the mercury glass Christmas ornaments. They are just beautiful!

These are gorgeous images, Kelly, and also the post that precedes. I know the hours of observation this takes. But oh, what a special double treat to both see and see again in the images. Enjoyed your verse, as well.

I'm afraid you're going to be sick of hummingbirds by the time I finish, but I can't resist writing about them. I have been away from the computer so much....sooo busy, that I'm falling behind on blogs and answering comments. In about a week or so, things will lighten up. Thank you for all the kind comments. You are always so nice!!

I can only echo what others are saying. What gorgeous picture. After your last posting I called our local greenhouse and was told crocosmia are not available in our region, althoug I would have been happy to have it as an annual only.
