Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?
...If the words sound queer and funny to your ear,
...a little bit jumbled and jivey,
Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy.
A kid'll eat ivy too, wouldn't you?"
(by Milton Drake, All Hoffman, and Jerry Livingston, 1943)
Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy.

(by Milton Drake, All Hoffman, and Jerry Livingston, 1943)
"Where's the ivy? Bahhh... All I have to eat is hay!"
...and on the other side of the street in a hazy, snowy, river fog stands a beautiful Victorian-Eclectic building officially called the Eden Park Stand Pipe, often called the Eden Park Water Tower, and mostly called the Huge Red Brick Castle Tower Across from the Krohn Conservatory.
I looked it up and learned it was a stand pipe for the Cincinnati Water Works. Its period of significance was 1875-1899 and the architect was Samuel Hannaford & Sons. (Click here for more info on this historical building.)
I simply must see Krohn Observatory. You have brought it alive and did it great justice in your many images this week. I love the lambs images best of all. Kelly, I wish for you and your family, a wonderful New Year and can't wait to see where you take us in 2011. Happy New Year! Carol
ReplyDeleteI just love seeing Christmas at Krohn on your blog! We won't be home until February so would have missed it without your images. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI am enjoying your meanderings through Krohns. Lovely photographs.
ReplyDeleteMary Ann
The Goats are tremendously beautiful Kelly.
ReplyDeleteI love the sheep - takes me back to my youth.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year.
If lambs eat ivy, send them over! We are constantly battling it.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully captured, Kelly! Love the whole post :)
ReplyDeleteVery pretty, Kelly. We enjoy seeing Krohn at any time of the year. Your pictures are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great series of photos. Really like the architecture of that building in the last photo.
ReplyDeleteI can hear a friend who worked for me, George, playing this song on his accordian, smiling at his silly lyrics. The spotted sheep looked like a Jacob, an old breed from England. The males have four horns.
ReplyDeleteThat 's an "earworm' that will take a while to get rid of! la lal lala la la! And I love the dreamy sheep shot! Beautifully captured just as he was smiling.
ReplyDeleteI love the shots of the lambs! Someone should take some pity on them and give them some ivy. I've enjoyed your series on the Khron. The Christmas tree is really beautiful with a lot of wonderful ornmanets. I think I would be spending a lot of time at the Khron if I lived anywhere close.
ReplyDeleteWhy the building is beautiful. And it is a water tower? Why are they usually so ugly if they can look like this? Wow. The lambs looked so cozy with the straw all tucked around them.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, those sheep almost jump off the page, or rather my laptop screen!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful sheep Kelly, and that water tower reminds me of a castle.
ReplyDeleteI remember that song. It was one of my favorites when I was about three or four years old.....and that, my friend, was a long time ago!
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed seeing your pictures from the Krohn Observatory.....so beautiful with all the snow, and how neat that they have a live nativity!
Sheep and Goats eat anything Kelly.{:)
ReplyDeleteIf they can get at it. Lovely photos.
Hehe my mum used to sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy.....and Ivy screamed her head off!" :D
ReplyDeleteI remember a "remake" of the song back in the 60's that actually hit the "pop" charts. I LOVE the water tower--what an interesting and beautiful old building. Great photos (again)! I look forward to your blogs in 2011. :D
ReplyDeleteNow I will have that song in my head all day long too! Cute sheep! Nice pics! I like goats also.
ReplyDelete...thanks, everyone! I had that song in my head for most of the day. Susan's right...a total earworm that nearly drove me nuts!! Hope I didn't pop it into any of your heads!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I loved that song when I was a kid (long, long ago). I was all grown up before I found out that it actually had meaningful words, not just the silly ones.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing your beautiful photos with us. They are stunning. I love your blog. Your work brings a smile to my face....
ReplyDeleteI like that brown & white sweater, er, sheep (every sheep I see is a yarn source!)
ReplyDelete;-)
