Hatched in the USA!

You may or may not know that 10,000 Birds has made this month Parrot Month. They are raising awareness of the perils facing parrots in the wild, their threatened status, and the importance of knowing where your parrots are from, which is a perfect lead in to this evening’s blog entry. My friends, Amy and Bill, are proud parents of two parrots hatched and raised in the USA. Rico is a five-year old, male, Peach-faced Lovebird with a hatch date of May 18, 2004. Kip, a male, Green-cheeked Conure, was hatched on September 12, 2008 and is still a baby. They both come from reputable breeders and have been DNA tested to confirm their sex.


Bill says they are well socialized and enjoy human interaction. They exhibit all the natural behaviors of parrots, which is what makes them such wonderful companions. They are playful, curious, affectionate and intelligent -- and require (and receive!) significant amounts of out-of-cage time. Rico, who is older and more familiar with his surroundings, is fully flighted and takes advantage of this skill by flying to all the different rooms in the house to find the members of his “flock.” His bond is so strong with his human family that he likes to gather them all together in one place. Nonetheless, his favorite past time is getting free rides on people’s shoulders. Kip is still young and is not capable of full flight. He enjoys eating and taking showers, truly living up the notion that Conures are simply fish with feathers.
