He can wipe away the grey!

Walking the woods along the Little Miami river today was less than inspirational (at first). It was so grey, it felt like the color could swallow you whole. Thank goodness this little guy came along peeping his happy song. His shade of grey is always welcome!!

Gray on gray...Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) in the winter
A Tufted Titmouse's peeping song cuts through the grey woods with cheer!

p.s. Bird profile shots are always great references for artists. Feel free to use these photographs to help you sketch, draw, or paint a cute tufted titmouse!

  2. Aren't they just the sweetest birds, Kelly? I love them and their little song... Since we are having such a mild winter here, our birds are singing NOW like it's spring... AND--they are getting 'frisky'... ha

    Cute pictures.

  10. Titmouse, chickadee, nuthatch…three cheerful, "talkative" little gray birds that brighten up any winter! And in their way, their color is as warm as that of any cardinal's.

  11. I hope all you birders on the eastern half of North America don't take the Tufted Titmouse for granted. I really enjoyed the abundance of them during my time in the east.

  13. Hi Kelly

A nice poem and a lovely bird. I have never seen a Titmouse but they look like real charmers. It is nice to still have some small birds even in the winter.

  14. We have lots of these little guys in our yard--they are very entertaining. A little too much so, sometimes, as they can see their reflection in our son's bedroom window and they attack it! We've had to remove his screen because they've poked holes in it!

  18. That's a nice coincidence. I just spotted California's plain titmouse at the park tosay. The whole place was full of birds. Spring

  20. I agree. Ditto for the nuthatch and junco. Sometimes flashy colors, though welcome, just aren't necessary.

  21. The context makes all the difference in the effect gray has on our moods, doesn't it? Although I'd still like some blue skies, one of these little guys can lift my spirits, too.

  26. ...thanks, everyone! We actually had some sunshine today, and even stranger....it was over 60 degrees. If you live anywhere in the midwest, you probably had similar weather. I'll take it. Soon it will be cold and gray again....just as long as I see a little of this guy's grey all be just fine! :-)
